She’s considered to be one of the most finest classic yachts still sailing…1911 built 19 metre class yacht Mariquita (Spanish for ladybird) designed by William Five III. With a sail area of 6,171 sq ft, the gaff rigged cutter is a bit bigger than the spotted wings of the small beetle. Mariquita, together with the other ‚Great 19’s’ Corona, Octavia and Norada, heralded the new era of Big Class racing. They set sail to Cowes, Cork, Harwich, Dartmouth and abroad to Le Havre and Kiel – the golden era of the 19 metre class was a busy and competitive one, but, as fast as it rose, came to an end after three seasons in 1913 with the threat of war. In 1915, Mariquita was sold and spent five peaceful years in Norway. Followed by a nearly three-decade long existence as a houseboat in Suffolk on the River Orwell, she was moved to Hamble in 1991. Restored by Fairlie Restorations, the Sleeping Beauty finally woke up… Since 2003 now, 39 meter long Mariquita is sailing the seas in a blaze of glory competing at renowned classic yacht regattas such as Les Voiles d’Antibes, Régates Royales Cannes, Westward Cup Cowes (winner 2015!), Round the Island Race Cowes, Panerai British Classic Yacht Club Regatta and at Cowes Week (8 to 15 August 2015!) every season. We at Gaastra are impressed by the rich history of Mariquita, being on the same wavelenght as Scottish yacht designer William Fife III, who once said, that the secret of a great yacht was that it should be both “fast and bonnie“.
